Every year, thousands of families face the unimaginable reality of a childhood cancer diagnosis. Thankfully, we’ve made tremendous strides in cancer treatment over the last three decades. In fact, almost 85% of kids will survive a cancer diagnosis. But almost isn’t good enough. So many families still face the harsh truth that their child has no viable treatment options. And those who do survive often endure lifelong health challenges due to the toxicity of existing therapies. We owe it to these children and their families to do more.
Amadeo’s Legacy of Bravery and Hope
Amadeo touched the hearts of everyone at Lurie Children’s. Diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of bone cancer at age 9, he faced his illness with extraordinary courage and resilience. Following his diagnosis, Amadeo went through chemotherapy, and later made a decision no child should ever have to make – to have his leg amputated to give himself the best chance to survive.
He told his mom, “I know that’s what I need to do. I want to live.”
After being in remission for months and getting used to his prosthetic leg, life was slowly returning to normal. So, it came as a complete shock when a routine X-ray showed that Amadeo’s cancer had returned. This time, it was in his chest and lungs. Despite access to the best treatments available, Amadeo passed away a few months later. He was 12 years old. He left behind a legacy of hope and serves as a constant reminder that we need better treatments. We need a cure.
During his treatment, Amadeo’s strength inspired everyone he met. He shared his journey and raised awareness about the challenges faced by children with cancer. His story underscores the critical need for continued research and support to ensure that every child has a fighting chance.
