When RJ was four years old, his world changed with a diagnosis of Rasmussen’s encephalitis, a disease that causes severe seizures. Fortunately, life-changing treatment was available just miles from their home at Lurie Children’s. “I went there, did the research, found Dr. Lam,” RJ’s mother, Jamilah, said. “Immediately, she had my family's heart.”
Dr. Sandi Lam, a pediatric neurosurgeon and researcher, introduced RJ’s family to a procedure called a hemispherotomy, a specialized surgery that disconnects the part of the brain causing seizures. Thanks to Dr. Lam’s expertise and groundbreaking research supported by philanthropy, RJ’s surgery was a success. Today, he is seizure-free and embracing life to the fullest.
